Have you heard of the cabbage soup diet? Variations of this diet have been popular for quite some time. No one seems to know the origin of this diet, which has been around since about 1995, yet it has proven to be effective. Dieters may eat an abundance of food on the cabbage soup diet, but with a limited selection. Cook once, eat for a few days. Plus, with the chill of fall days on the horizon, soup seems appealing. For many of us, fall also signals the busy life of back to school, sports, and a hectic prelude to the holidays. This just might be the diet to try to lose some of those pesky extra pounds in a relatively inexpensive way.

The cabbage soup diet is a seven day diet consisting of two bowls daily of fat free cabbage soup, and selections of fruit, vegetables, fat free milk, and meat. It is fat free and high fiber. As with any diet, drink plenty of water. Alcohol, bread, and diet soda are not allowed.

Why does eating soup for weight loss work? It is not the magic of cabbage; this diet is basically a low calorie diet, a factor which leads to weight loss. The diet contains approximately 800 to 1050 calories per day. When you are hungry, you eat the cabbage soup, which sustains you and staves off hunger.

Ready to try the cabbage soup diet? Here is a basic outline on how the plan works. Follow the guidelines for seven days.

Day 1 - Cabbage soup, all the fruit you want. No bananas.

Day 2 – Cabbage soup, all the vegetables you want. No beans, peas, corn. Eat a baked potato with butter this day only.

Day 3 - Cabbage soup, all the fruits and vegetables allowed on day 1 and 2.

Day 4 - Cabbage soup, up to eight bananas, two glasses of non fat milk.

Day 5 - Cabbage soup, up to 20 ounces of beef, skinless chicken, or fish. Up to six fresh tomatoes. 6 to 8 glasses of water.

Day 6 - Cabbage soup, up to 3 beef steaks. Unlimited vegetables.

Day 7 - Cabbage soup, up to 2 cups of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice, unlimited vegetables.

Drink lots of unsweetened tea, coffee, and water.

Follow the plan as closely as possible for maximum results.

Here is an example of a cabbage soup recipe. There are many out there, and no single one is the perfect combination, spice it up to your individual taste. Prepare the one that sounds best to you, but follow the basics.

Cabbage Soup Recipe

• 6 green onions, chopped

• 2 green peppers, seeds discarded, chopped

• 2 – 16 oz cans of diced tomatoes, undrained

• 3 carrots, peeled and chopped

• 10 oz mushrooms, cleaned and sliced

• 1 bunch celery, sliced

• 1 head cabbage, chopped

• 1 package dry onion soup mix, or your flavor choice

• 48 oz can low sodium tomato or V8 juice

• 8 cups vegetable or chicken broth or water

• 2 bouillon cubes, optional

Simmer for two hours. This is where I love to use my crock-pot.

There are many recipes out there, and no single one is the perfect combination, spice it up to your individual taste. Prepare the one that sounds best to you, but follow the basics. Add some of the following variations if it makes the soup more flavorful for you.

1 – 16 oz can green beans

2 – Season with curry or cayenne

3 – 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar

4 – 6 cloves garlic, minced

5 – Red cabbage, red onions, red peppers

6 – Southwest flavor, season with cilantro, cumin, and chili powder

Dieters should lose the promised 10 to 15 pounds on this diet, yet much of the weight loss may be from fluid loss, and not fat burning. Dieters have also complained of dizziness and flatulence. Exercise is not a factor in this diet, and should be included in all diet plans.

The key to success? Remember, the cabbage soup diet is designed to be a seven day diet, and should not be followed longer than that.  To maintain weight loss ease, back in to normal eating with portion control.
